A team is two or more people who work together to attain a common goal. Being able to work as a team member is an essential part of getting the job done in today’s work environment. It is important to look at the task as well as relationships between you and your team members. To accomplish this, members need to look at what is required of them in order to be a valued member of the team.
Team Building and Group Dynamics is an elective seminar for the Certificate in Leadership Development, and is a required seminar for the Certificate in Team Communication.
PROGRAM CONTENT
Functions of a Team
- Identifying the purpose of the team
- Developing team guidelines
- Understanding your role as a member of your team and department
- Analyzing your own effectiveness as a team member
Group Dynamics
- Stages of team growth
- Understanding the stages of team development
- Formation, conflict, cohesion, and synergy (forming, storming, norming, and performing)
- Styles of influence
Team-Building Behaviours
- Identifying the benefits and characteristics of an effective team (departmental and/or cross-functional)
- Setting productive goals
- Effective team communication
- Team decision-making
Facilitator: Pat Watson

Pat Watson is president of P.W. Associates, Incorporated and she specializes in management and employee training and development. P.W. Associates, Incorporated works with people to create community in organizations. Pat has over 25 years of experience working with government agencies, gas and oil, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, health care and the hospitality industries – locally, nationally and internationally. Her work entails designing and facilitating workshops with special emphasis on management of change, coaching & mentorship, leadership, personal mastery, stress management, interpersonal communication, and team building.
Pat facilitates a diverse number of training programs for Saint Mary’s Executive and Professional Development. She is an adjunct faculty member in the Management Development Program for Women offered jointly by Saint Mary’s and Mount Saint Vincent Universities.
Pat is a member of CAPS (Canadian Association of Professional Speakers) and the South Shore Women’s Network. Pat’s second love is singing jazz and gospel music and she presently performs with a jazz trio and Nova Gospel Ensemble. She has just released her first solo CD called, “Feeling Good”.
Pat is a graduate of Antioch University (BA), and she has taken graduate courses towards her master’s degree in organizational development at American University. Pat recently received her license as a Practitioner (RScP) in Spiritual Counseling.
